Special Weather Statement issued September 12 at 4:21PM MDT by NWS Grand Junction CO
AREAS AFFECTED: Roan and Tavaputs Plateaus; Grand Valley; Debeque to Silt Corridor; Grand and Battlement Mesas; Central Gunnison and Uncompahgre River Basin
DESCRIPTION: At 420 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Palisade to 18 miles southeast of Grand Junction to 12 miles west of Delta. Movement was northeast at 30 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and half inch hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Palisade, Mesa, Skyway, Whitewater, Cameo, and Clifton. This includes the following highways... Interstate 70 in Colorado between mile markers 37 and 52. U.S. Highway 50 in Colorado between mile markers 41 and 60. Colorado 65 between mile markers 31 and 33, between mile markers 35 and 50, and between mile markers 53 and 61. Colorado 141 near mile marker 154.
INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
